I would pair with your brand choice of at least a gigabyte modem. If you have a less capable modem, you may want to get the slightly less capable 1750 series router.

Typically these modems are called Gateways and are used if you have Voice over Internet telephone service. The battery provides a few minutes for you to place an emergency call in a power outage. That's it. IF the internet provider also loses service then it will have to send a signal to refresh your modem. It can't do that until you remove the battery, refresh the modem, replace the battery. All in all not very convenient as I found out. IF you want backup power for your modem and router then a UPS is the answer. (Uninterruptible Power Supply). It's actually a great item to have to protect both the units. You can get many inexpensive UPS's to back up the modem and router. I like TrippLite but APC is another well known brand. If you add a UPS to a Gateway modem with a backup battery, remove the backup battery from the modem. It's unnecessary and will prevent automatic reset.
