No you can't use this by itself. You also need a cable modem box. This Nighthawk unit is only a wireless router, and a great one at that. Your rental box modem should work fine with this, just plug it in and follow easy setup instructions that come with it. But why lease a modem from the cable company, if you are spending money on a good wireless router, when you can also buy a great modem for $100 or less.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have been using this for a better part of 8 years now without a modem. I bought this because I was told this had a built in modem. Which is how I've been using it as well. Used it with Xfinity, at&t and then FiOS in Texas and Virginia.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The specifications on this very unit and page say that the modem is integrated within the unit. I hope it is because I've ordered one based on that information provided by BB. This should be both a wireless router and modem according to specs page.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You have to have a modem. You need to supply Internet to the home then you can hook up the Wifi. This is only to spread wireless internet ability through home
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You will still need a modem to access the internet through your internet service provider (ISP). The NETGEAR R8000 AC3200 ROUTER is not a modem.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you will need a modem. This device provides wireless, or wired connectivity between end user devices and the modem. If your concern is renting a modem you can purchase a modem of your choice at Best Buy or other vendor. Good luck with your network!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you have CenturyLink 1G/1G service (GPON-Gigabit Passive Optical Network) aka FTTH-Fiber to the Home, then yes you can get rid of your CenturyLink modem. The only equipment you need from CenturyLink is an ONT-Opitical Network Terminal which is where they terminate the fiber line. The ONT then has a standard Ethernet WAN output that goes to your router. You need to get your PPPoE username/password from a CenturyLink rep. Configure the Router for PPPoE mode (username/password) and then also add VLAN ID tag of 201 for CenturyLink and wahlah you now have Gigabit hardwired network with a 1G connection to the WAN without being locked to using any modem from a provider. Of course wireless will be slower but with a modem like this Netgear it will be fast enough for most any application. NOTE: Most older consumer routers can't handle a direct 1G WAN connection (typically only got about half of the advertised speed). The newer midrange to high range Netgear and others can handle it. If you sign up for CenturyLink 1G service don't buy the modem, only rent it and then return once you have configured your router to work without. The CL provided modems are pretty weak in configuration settings and have limited range over wireless.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You still have to connect a modem to the Nighthawk X6.
