Yes this is just a router not a modem and router combination so yes you need your providers modem to connect to the router which then provides your home or business with wifi access.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No you don’t need a separate modem or dsl. This is basically 2 routers. The first router you will connect to your modem with an Ethernet wire. The second router which they call a satellite can go anywhere you choose in your house. It simply plugs into the wall. I had a dead spot upstairs and I put my satellite upstairs in my game room. I connected my PS4 to the satellite using an Ethernet wire and it works great. It’s really easy to setup. Everything is done from the app on your phone. You can add a third satellite if you want also. I really don’t have a need for a third one but I may just get it anyway. Last but not least I was averaging 136 mb of speed upstairs. Now I get 436 mb. It increased my internet speed tremendously.
