The third band is strictly for the base router and the extender to communicate without piggybacking off the other bands.

The Netgear team answer is a little lazy, just cut and paste from the data sheet, didn't really answer the question. But it's also not user accessible, so just enjoy it, everyone says it works great (I'm about to buy one of these systems but have not yet).
