The Orbi is a router and creates a “WiFi mesh”. It is not a WiFi booster. If you live in an apartment, or small house, you could probably get by with just the router (RBR20), as it covers up to 2000 sq ft. I have the RBK50, (router and satellite) and it covers up to 5000 sq ft. If you have an ISP’s modem or modem/router combo, the Orbi will connect to the ISP’s device via the supplied Ethernet cable.

While you have the option of strictly connecting your internal devices together (i.e. your laptop in one room to your printer in another), no router can connect you to the Internet without a subscription through an Internet Service Provider.
