This router specifically allows 4 computers to be hard wired to the back of the device. You can also connect many devices wirelessly to this router. I do not have an eReader so you would need to look at the eReader manual to see if it allows you to connect this device to a wireless network. You do not need the cable company to connect your device to your internal network... However if you plan on being able to connect any of you computers or wireless devices to the internet you will need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that you connect this router to...
