Thank you for the question and happy to help. The system doesn't require wi-fi cable connection to function as a local recorder for up to 16 wired cameras to the recorder which can be connected via HDMI to a TV or monitor for review. The recorder also has its own built-in wi-fi network to allow for up to 8 wi-fi based cameras for a total camera count of up to 24. If you want to be able to remotely access the footage via the mobile app you do need wired ethernet connection to your network/router. We require wired as it is the most secure method to connect and ensure best transfer speeds for the 4K video feeds. Thanks, Night Owl SP Digital Support Team
