No it does not have to be connected to internet for recording. It will record whatever you tell it to record in setup but to view it remotely (from phone, etc.) it will need to be connected to internet.

The only time you should need internet is if you want to connect your system to the app. Otherwise, you should be able to record and view footage from the DVR offline.

If you do not have Internet capability or do not wish to remotely view your system, you can locally view it on a TV or monitor. Most Night Owl devices can be connected to your TV or monitor using an HDMI cable. Keep in mind, most of our products require your TV or monitor to be a minimum of 1080p resolution to function.
