I have used this lens on a 3100, and though it does technically work, it does NOT autofocus. Doing some research I found that it's because it lacks the "Silentwave motor" as designated on lenses that say AF-S in the name, such as the 35mm f/1.8 Lens. (I read this on Nikon's website under tech specifications for this camera: "AF-S Lens Required for Autofocus") This is probably too late for the original poster but I hope this helps someone else. P.S. a new 50mm AF-S lens is about to be released from Nikon as of June 16 (according to one website)
I would recommend:
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.works with camera in manual mode only
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. As Jennie has stated, yes but only in MF mode. Nikon used to build the motor into the body for all their cameras but they started releasing lower end bodies without the AF motor to compete with Canon (their bodies don't have a focusing motor either). The result was that these lenses needed to have their own motor in them in order to be able to Auto-Focus. This lens is the older D variant and does not have the focusing motor so you would need an enthusiast or pro body for this to work with autofocus as those bodies still have the focusing motor built in and yet they can still use the focusing motor in the lenses as well.
