• Yes it good lens for just about everything Of course a lens that extends to 400mm would be much better. Especially when you take in the 1.5 magnifaction

• Go to the Nikon website and check. They have a compatibility checker that is essential. I want to say this lens will fit a D3100, but it will not communicate with a D3100, which would limit you to manual focus only and no VR. The lowest tech I have seen for this is the D3300.
