“is this a macro lens? or is it just a slightly closer lens then one that comes with the D3100?”

• It is not a macro lens, and its reproduction ratio is about the same as that on the kit lens, gaining you little to no benefit for macro work. Nikon's macro lenses are labeled, "Micro-NIKKOR."

• It's not a macro at all. It's a somewhat wide angle lens.
