“Will it work on the D5100? I'm getting a D5100 and want to get this lens. Also, does it have to be really close up (example: flower) or can it take portraits? (like having the subject clear and backround blurred) and not have to be really close to them”

Yes, this lens is compatible with the D5100. This lens is perfect for low-light conditions, travel, environmental portrait and general photography.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This a a great general purpose lens and will do fine for portraits unless you are doing close work in which case you might want a 50mm. But for general purposes this is a better all around lens for general photography.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes all DX lenses will work with D5100. It's great in low light, you will have to be fairly close, for it is a fixed focal length of 35mm. I've uploaded a couple of example shots.
