“Will the focus work automatically or manually with the d40 camera?”

• My D40 died I wore it out. I upgraded to a 5500 and what a difference. I was able to use my old leneses on the 5500 with now issues. So the 300 should work for you.

• Yes it will work on the D40 series if you're not in a low light situation.

• The lens is fully compatble with the D40, since the lens is AF-S that has the Af motor built-in.
