“I heard the lens comes with a one year + an extended 4 year warranty through Best Buy yet they still offer at a high cost a warranty plan, does that plan cover something different?”

I did not opt for the extended Best buy waranty. I suggest you try your best to perform a rigorous test on the lens after purchase and if it does not meet your expectations return it in accordance with their return policy.
