“Why can't this item be backordered? It is disappointing and inconvenient to task the consumer with "keep checking back" to see if it is available. I completely understand that it is unknown when Nikon will resume normal shipping after the tragedy in Japan but I know I want this lens when it does come in.”

I my experience, Best Buy has no automatic way to notify coustumers when a product is available. This was the case when I bought my D4s and it was out of stock, with no known date for shipping. I was told by the sales staff to keep checking the website for availability, apparently this is how they check for themselves. I went home and opened the Best Buy page on my browser and refreshed the page every 15 miniuts or so. Sure enough, after about 2 hours, one of these camers popped up. Not the best way to find what you are looking for, but it worked for me.

Also, while it can't be backordered in a store or at bestbuy.com, I have called BestBuy customer service and they have allowed me to backorder other lenses in the past, so I don't see why if you called and asked they might not be willing to do the same for you.
