The 70-200 f4 is a great lens. In bright light, it focuses fast and accurately. depending on how close you want to be to the action, you might want more reach but with a DX sensor this gives you the equivalent of 300mm. The 70-300 is significantly slower focus and is a variable f-stop lens. This means the further you zoom, the less light is available to the sensor. Both are great lenses and I have shot birds in flight with both lenses so you can capture rapid action.

I have a 16-85 wide angle lens and it would capture a sporting event just fine if you're right on the sidelines. However, if you're on a 1st level stadium and want good closeups, a 70-200 would be really good. 70-300 is overkill. I have both a 16-86 and a 70-200 so I can capture a full range of photos from 16 to 200.
