The Nikon D5000 is supposed to accept and autofocus all AF-S lens. Rather than believing a stranger on the internet, you should take your camera in and ask to try the lens before you buy it, to make sure that it works and does what you expect it to.

The advantage of this lens over the other one commonly sold (55-300) is that this lens a full-size FX/35mm frame lens and will give you the equivalent of 105mm to 450mm with the D5000. Thus, if you have an FX Nikon (or 35mm Nikon) you can use it for both this one and the D5000
