• Your D5300 lacks a focus motor to provide autofocus. It requires lenses that have a built-in autofocus motor. Nikon denotes these lenses with an AF-S. This stands for Nikon's Silent Wave Focus motor. The 70-300 is an AF-S type of lens, therefore, you can use it on your D5300 WITH autofocus.
