“I have a d3100 and it came with the standard shooting lens- 18-55mm. Im looking to be able to take portrait shots of my children and family. What lens do you reccommend?”

For a high quality and inexpensive option I would get the Nikon 55-200 VR lens. I have used this lens and it is small, lightweight, and sharp.

The lens that comes with the kit is horrible. It's a basic lens and has ok glass. It makes photos have a slight halo and haze to them. I would upgrade and get the better 18-55mm lens at least...or upgrade and get a 14 or 10MM wide angle lens. You can really get up close and have a great depth of field when shooting portraits. Super Wide angle lens, have a higher price tag but the results are awesome.
