Yes you can see the moon with this camera. I had the blessing of having this camera when the super moon was out. Everyone loved my pictures I shared on Facebook. I was amazed at the quality. I love this camera, I haven't been able to really get into detail everything it does. But it does take some awesome pictures. I love it. I received it as a birthday gift.

I definitely needed something to lean on for stabilization however. A tripod would have been nice, but I was on the beach and tripods don't do well in the sand.

Being both a semi-professional photographer (getting back to being a full time professional in a few years) and an amateur astronomer (I became interested in photography through astronomy and took astrophotos back in the days of film), I can tel you taking photos of the moon will be easy. The "normal" lens for a full frame or older 35mm film camera is considered to be a 50mm (although strictly mathematically speaking it is closer to 43.26mm). With this camera completely zoomed out to the full frame equivalent of 2000mm (actual 357mm) you will have the moon at approximately 40x power (2000 / 50 = 40) and zoomed out digitally to 8000mm approximately 160x power (with greatly reduced resolution because the photos will only have 4 mp instead of 16 mp). There are few draw backs including the fact that you can only shoot in the jpeg format and not in RAW (.nef format). What I want to see is how this camera does with Jupiter, Saturn and Venus (maybe Mars as well). I know that this is probably way more information then you wanted but maybe others will want to know more.

The selling point for this camera is how well you can zoom in and see surface details. And you really can see a LOT of detail, even hand held, the image stabilization is pretty amazing. On a tripod, its even better.

It also has approximately 8,000mm in 35mm (135) format when digital zoom is set at 4x, which is the maximum zoom it can reach. With this kind of reach you can get very clear and detailed images of the moon. There is even a "Moon" Scene Mode on this camera which lets you adjust hue, brightness and angle of view so that every moon image you take is perfect for sharing with the world.
