Sorry I have not done this type of photography but my nephew uses macro lens..
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It depends on how close you want to be to the ants. Each macro lens will provide a different focal length that you have to be at to get the focus you want and there are quite a number of them to chose from. For instance a Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.53 ft (0.163m) while a Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED lens will let you only get as close as 1.0 ft. (0.314 m) to achieve focus on the tiny subjects before you. Either of these two macros would be a great addition to a camera bag and would have no problem getting vivid details of the ants you are trying to record.
