Any one of our DSLR's would be fine for still shots. The D5300 is excellent in that it has built-in WiFi so you can - along with Nikon's Wireless Mobile Utility app (free download for both iOS and Android-based smartphones and tablets) - control the camera with your smart device! If you are looking to take portraits you may want to look into purchasing another lens that will give you depth of field you want to control the viewers eye on your photo. Check out the NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 available at Best Buy for that. It's a great price and a great lens for portraits.
