It sounds like your camera is in Auto Mode, which defaults the viewfinder to show you where all your autofocus points are. To change this you can use the monitor when focusing, which gives you a single autofocus box which can be moved using the selector button. Another option is to change your mode to M, A, S or P, which will let you control the point of focus with the selector button, whether you're using either the viewfinder or the monitor.
