For moon photography it’s all about lens & your camera settings. You definitely want to get a macro designed lens to be able to zoom in very closely and then watch your f stop as well as shutter speed

However, how close you get and how much of the nighttime sky you can capture is actually dependent on the lens you use with the camera. This camera comes with a Nikon AF-PDX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens which is fast and provides sharp images of subjects both near and far; however, if you are truly invested in night time photography you may also want to look into get a wide-angle zoom lens with a fast aperture for capturing amazing images of the night time sky.
