They DID offer the Nikon 850 as a pre-order, that's when I ordered mine. The 850 is now shipping to all who pre-ordered, (got mine on Monday). Since it is shipping, it is no longer a pre-order item.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.They did originally. I ordered during that time and looks like I'll be getting it tomorrow. Now it would be backorders (instead of Pre-orders) since the camera is out now. Best guess is that since Nikon can't guarantee when they will get supply they don't want customers upset that they can't fulfill the orders in a timely manner (all the other major retailers are getting bombarded with "when will I get my camera" complaints). But I think they should add backorders but put a big disclaimer that they do not know when the backorders will get filled.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Best Buy did a pre-order at the end of August/ the first week of September. You had to prepay for the camera in full. This was my first hand experience. I need to mention that I don't work for BB. I'm very fortunate that my camera arrived late last week. My colleagues, whom ordered their cameras from other retailers, are still waiting with no eta. My recommendation would be to go to your local BB and see what they can do.
