I would say the 8x42 because it is lighter and provides a good field of view. The hands shake less when viewing wild life. When you say long distance it depends on the distance. Then you may need the heavier 10x42. What I have done is get closer to the wild life and then observe. I do not recommend the Nikon due to its case material make up. It feels oily and it loses its luster quite fast. The Zeiss ED 8x42 is better but more expensive. I have a Celestron Nature DX ED 8x42 which is perfect and less expensive than the Zeiss. Its lenses have high resolution and no chromatic issues and the field of view is perfect.
