It depends. If you already have a speedlight with commander capability (SB-700, SB-800 or SB-900), then the R1 system is all you need. If you don't have a speedlight with commander capability, then you'll need the R1C1 kit, which includes the SU-800 commander. (Or you could buy one of the speedlights I listed plus the R1 kit. More expensive but more flexibility.)
