The reservior holds enough to brew a whole pot of coffee. If you just brew a single cup then yes, it will only take enough water to make that cup. You can make more cups with what's left, but you'll have to fill it to the full mark to make a pot. The minimum needed for each size (cup, travel, half and full) is marked on the reservior, but certain brews can use less water than others.
