So I found out that I can use a normal basket-style paper filter an place it underneath the permanent filter. The size is almost perfect and it keeps all the debris out of my cup! It might help to add a couple of drops of water to the empty filter after wedging the paper filter in. So happy now!

The booklet says not to use paper filters, but it's tempting because fine ground coffee seems to leave sludge with just the permanent filter.
