If you plan on putting this in a storage area without any other items such as keys or pens, i'd say the screen is strong enough. If you aren't that careful with your devices, i'd get one for the pocket sake.

My son did play with it for a weeek before I bought a screen protector. After he slid it across the floor and threw it on soft surfaces I bought a screen protector.
