“How can PRE-ORDER be out of stock.....isn't that the whole purpose of PRE-ORDER. If they haven't been released yet, I should be able to order one. This gives them a round about number to manufacturer. Why do they make it so difficult!”

This isn't often how pre-orders work especially with limited edition products. The whole purpose is to guarantee ahead of time you are getting one. The manufacturer probably was only making a set number because they are limited.
