You'll be happy with either. I'm not sure where the previous guy that answered got his numbers but they are wrong. If you look at any recent benchmarks, this comes down to the games. Most games the chips are neck and neck. Others favor one or the other. I will say this, your battery probably won't last as long with the RX580 as it would with the GTX1060. That is because it doesn't operate as cool so the fans run more frequently. My last laptop had an Nvidia chip and I pretty much always had it plugged in though so no deal breaker for me there. Might not be the same case for you. Other than that, the RX580 is the better choice in my opinion hands down. Most mobile 1060s are gutted down to 3GB (plus clocked lower) unless you shell out. This has a full 8GB of GDDR5 that you won't cap, 3GB you possibly could. Not to mention Vulcan and DX12 are the future. They will favor the RX580 meaning you will get better performance out of this long term. If you want some links I'll provide them below. I got this on sale for $900. Good luck finding a 1060 at that price with a 7700hq and 12GB of RAM. Keep in mind these are desktop chips in laptops so I wouldn't expect performance on par with their big brothers. Here it shows a list of 27 games running under both chips. This is a few months old. AMD drivers have improved since then. https://www.techspot.com/review/1393-radeon-rx-580-vs-geforce-gtx-1060/ There aren't a lot of benchmarks for the laptop RX580 yet but more will pop up if you want to wait it out. If you look at notebook check, under the mobile RX580 description page it lists this version just above the 1060 mobile. You'll find this under class 1 cards listed in the center. https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-580-Laptop-GPU.215184.0.html Lastly here on user benchmark, it shows the 1060 marginally ahead. Keep in mind with this site these benchmarks are utilizing different hardware across the board so they should be taken as so. If you want to spend a few hundred dollars extra for not even a 6% increase in performance you might get with a 1060 you might as well dish out more for a 1070. http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-RX-580-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/3923vs3639 So summed up this is a really good buy. When DX12 becomes more relevant you will find the RX580 to be the better choice honestly over the 1060. A 1070 isn't really a fair comparison as it's more on the higher end of the series. I have a 1070 in my desktop and I love it. With a laptop you always have to consider the future. Yes you could buy an alienware, spend way more than you need to, hope you are savvy enough to change out an MXM chip down the road, but not many people actually do that. There is a lot more to consider when changing a mobile GPU than just socket type. I'm not sure on temps yet. If I pull some I'll post them for you. I've played Rocket League so far for hours and the laptop barely gets warm. Maybe I'll try to push BF1, Overwatch, etc. and let you know. Good luck!

Please try again later.Everyone will get different results, especially when comparing the RX 580 and the GTX 1060, to me, these cards perform almost identical in real world situations, just depends on drivers and what GPU will a game favor more. I compared my RX 580 with my brothers GTX 1060 and my RX 580 is ahead by quite a lot actually. Here's my results: (images provided) NOTE: Both GPU's with a slight overclock...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Temps 70 - 80C they put the temp target 90C so its all good on it. The card is on par with the 1060 6GB. The 1070 would outperform it but cost a lot more. I personally would go with the laptop with the 580 due to GCN architecture drivers over time will last longer since last 2 gen of cards from amd have been the GCN arch so performance will just keep improving, but if you can find a laptop with 1060 cheaper than the 580 one go with it. the 580 and 160 will push this laptop in 1080p no problem. Master X Master = 140 FPS Guildwars 2 = 60FPS Vsync No Mans Sky Ultra - 55 FPS - 60FPS I just gave you some FPS numbers based on last couple games I played don't really have time to benchmark a bunch of games.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I just bought the laptop and the gpu does well with games, however I mainly purchased it for a video production setup and needed to output from the gpu 30hz in 1080p which is 30fps using the built in hdmi but was not available as an option. I was outputting to a 60hz hdtv, the card gave me options for 30hz interlaced but not progressive (it gave a range of 24 to 60 hz but only in interlaced for 30hz). My Blackmagic Design Atem requires us to match all resolutions coming into the switcher, so we needed 30hz progressive for 1080p 30fps. The Nvidia laptops I own are much better for custom settings as two other laptops with nvidia cards (one is 6 years old) gave me the 30 hz progressive option no problem. My advice if you are going to use automated presets by the card you will be fine but if you want customization you might run into issues like me. Neither HP or AMD support where able to help with a solution, We tried several different drivers. HP took control of my laptop and the tech tried till he gave up. This is a great laptop but I would go for the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 models as the Nvidia control panel will not lock you out of presets or customization like the Radeon did in this case. I am attaching a screen capture that shows the limited Radeon Additional settings and the display adaptor properties that show available refresh rates without a 30 hz only interlaced.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Lunar, the previous guy who said that these number are wrong. These are actual benchmarks that have been done on both the laptop GPU’s. Secondly, the laptop version of the RX 580 is not the same as the Desktop RX 580 which is a lot better. The laptop RX 580 is severely downclocked. Whereas the Laptop GTX 1060 is essentially the same as the desktop version. I get boost clock over 1880 MHz on the GPU which is higher than some of the Desktop boost clock of the GTX 1060 6GB. The RX 580 laptop version can’t boost that high because it consumes way more power than laptops could handle. The techspot review you showed doesn’t have the same clocks as the laptop version whereas the reviews and the numbers I posted were from the both the laptop version of the GTX 1060 6GB and the laptop version of the RX 580 which was what the initial question was about. Even with the DX 12 and Vulkan it is likely that the laptop version of the GTX 1060 6GB will come out on top because it seems to be at least 10% faster. Plus, nVidia has greatly improved their Vulkan performance with recent driver updates. Secondly, with respect to replacing the GPU. The Alienware doesn’t do it via the MXM chip replacement. They have something called the Graphics Amplifier which is an external device that connects to a port on the back of the laptop which is connected to the PCI-Express lanes of the laptop. Inside the Graphics Amplifier you can put a desktop card like the GTX 1080 Founders Edition and the laptop will use the external graphics card to run the laptop. Bestbuy actually sells this. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/alienware-graphics-amplifier-black/4330739.p?skuId=4330739 You could probably get it cheaper elsewhere or used. Then you can buy a Graphics Card like say a GTX 1080 and put it inside the Amplifier and have your games run off of it. Yes this laptop is cheaper but you don’t get the flexibility of upgrading in the future and the better performance with the GTX 1060 6GB. Dell also sometimes offers 10% discounts on their Alienware which makes it come really close to the retail price of this particular laptop. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you look at head to head comparison the GTX 1060 6GB gets better performance. In terms of Graphics Score the GTX 1060 6GB in TimeSpy gets 3,747. http://techavenue.wixsite.com/techavenue/alienware-17-r4 With RX 580 you will get a Graphics score of 3375 in Time Spy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4ZP6k9ThoY Look at video part at 0:46. So, the GTX 1060 will be faster. Remember, with Alienware you can always upgrade the graphics chip by getting the External Alienware Graphics Amplifier which connects directly to the Pci-express 3.0 lanes on the laptop and upgrade to a future graphics card.
