• you need an amplifier any CD player, blu-ray, or source, need extra amplification to run speakers... you can listen to the headphones though, as it has a headphone jack

• Yes, you need a separate amp. This is a component, just like a turntable or any other CD player.

• The only way you can hook up speakers directly is if they are powered speakers with their own built in amplifier (like you would by for a computer). Otherwise, you need an amplifier.
