100 watts per channel should be enough for a medium sized living room. However, it all depends on the efficiency of your speakers - check their specs. If they're horn tweeters like Klipsch then their sensitivity rating is 90 + decibels and you'll have no problem. if they're more audiophile speakers, which tend to be less efficient but more natural sounding, they typically have a rating in the mid-80s decibel range for efficiency and may not be enough. Also, there is no standard for rating AV receiver power so be sure the hundred watts per channel is rated at 8 ohms with multiple channels (like the Onkyo 686 is) and not 4 or 6 ohms driving one channel which gives a higher wattage number. For the money and even $100 more you're probably not going to find better power and value than this Onkyo 686.
