This receiver is a 7.2 channel receiver, which 7 speakers can be connected and the ability to connect 2 powered subwoofers.

7.1 stands for 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer. This can be 5 speakers (FL,C,FR,RL,RR) and sub in 1 room and a separate room/patio with 2 speakers and those 2 speakers are turned on and off with zone button and can be a different source.
