Hello there! The microwave can be placed on the countertop or it can be built-into a cabinet opening using a trim kit. If you wish to place the microwave in a cabinet opening without a trim kit make sure to allow 3 inches (7.6 cm) of space on both sides of the oven and 2 inches (5 cm) of space on top of the oven for proper ventilation. - S
