A non-inverter microwave turns the power on/off and cooks less evenly. The inverter microwave actually runs the power at the percentage set (e.g. 50%). Non-inverter runs 100% for 30 seconds, 0% for 30 seconds and averages "50%". Inverter runs 1 minute at 50%. (These are just examples) Much more even cooking - I've used these for many years and the inverter does actually cook the food better.
