Yes, you can turn off the ringer by pressing and holding 0 key on each handset until it beeps, on the base unit you need to press and hold (-) volume button until the unit beeps. If the ringer is off, you won't hear when the answering machine answers. The only exception would be if you have call screening turned on and in this case you need to turn it off.
