Hi! The cell phones can connect via Bluetooth to the base, however it will transfer to the handsets as well. For best performance, we recommend using your Bluetooth headset within 1 m(3.3 feet) of the base unit. -M

When I set up our first system, I hooked up the base first. All went well. This time, however, I happened to be on a different floor of the house when I opened the box so I started plugging in the extra handsets. They receive no signal until the base is connected. I plugged in the base to the power outlet, but had to go back downstairs to get the phone cord. During that time, the other handsets still did not have a connection. Based on that alone, it would seem to me that the base must have a telephone cord connection to a working landline in order for it to be functional and in order for the base to send a signal to the expanded handsets. I can’t say if there is a way around this since I have never tried (& I don’t actually use the Link2Cell feature. I tried it briefly with our first set and really didn’t have a need for it nor care for it. That doesn’t mean you wouldn’t love it, and I didn’t take the time to fully learn the feature, but it wasn’t a feature I needed. I just wanted a certain number of handsets with a digital answering machine by Panasonic so it comes standard with this system.) I wish I could be of more help, but I will say that I did place a call to Panasonic’s customer service agent (here in the U.S., I believe) and must admit the woman I spoke with was EXTREMELY patient with me, very helpful, and really took her time to find the answer to my questions. I think they would be the best people to answer your question if no one else is able to tell you whether they’ve actually tried this specific scenario or not and if it worked for them. My apologies for not having a definitive answer, but my best guess is “no” simply because it seems my base doesn’t work at all unless it has connection to a landline. (If our power goes out, all of the units are dead as well, obviously.) Good luck & I hope you find the exact answer you’re looking for! If customer service cannot say for sure, I’d say buy it and try it. You can always return it if it doesn’t work. Best wishes!
