Hi Charlie! Yes, you will need to have the base unit plugged into the wall, the batteries are there in case of a power outage, so you can still use the phone. You must have the base unit plugged in the wall at all times. -A

Also, love this phone for blocking spam calls. We kept getting the calls one after the other 20 in one day. Now, it rings once and knocks them off. You can set it to not ring and still knock them off.
