Yes, the base unit can be plugged into the wall for electricity and not use batteries. This is how I have my unit. It works great.

Yes, the base will operate with AC current, the batteries are only needed to keep your stored information (speed dials, etc) in case there is a power failure. Without the batteries, the stored information will need to be reprogrammed.

Yes, works fine without them. But I think the batteries are for when there is a power outage so your phone keeps working. Also, love this phone for blocking spam calls. We kept getting the calls one after the other 20 in one day. Now, it rings once and knocks them off. You can set it to not ring and still knock them off.

Yes that’s how I had my unit prior to buying the batteries since the corded unit did not come with batteries I only bought the batteries in case the power went out then we still had a working phone
