“If I buy this version (standard) for PS5 and a buddy has standard version on PS4 will we be able to play multiplayer? Or do we have to get the cross-gen version which is more expensive ? Thanks.”

Yes you can play with your friend to my knowledge. The cross-gen version I think is more for people who buy on ps4, but anticipate getting a ps5 and want to be able to transfer the game to the new system.
