yes you can . If you want a bulb only then you can buy a separate and you must need a hue bridge to use that bulb. Starter kit is the best package to get 4 bulb with hue bridge at cheaper price .

You can connect just that bulb, however the one hub would control any of the other bulbs anywhere on your network if you wanted add them in the future. I have 5 color and 6 whites throughout my house. You can can control them individually or in groups.
