Yes you need a hub. That allows you to use the hue app, connect with Amazon’s Alexa, etc. For it to be anything more than a bulb you need a hub. That way you can isolate the specific light and control it.

And then you can turn it off and on change brightness and colors, just using your phone, no bridge needed. It even works with amazon alexa. There are many options on LIFX, but all have the same principle in terms of setup and use.
