Pros: -Easy sync with Hue hub -Great customization of dimmer switch buttons -Easy way to make the Hue system friendly for guests and non-smartphone users Cons: -Sometimes disconnects from Hue bridge momentarily -Button customizations are a bit buried in the new Hue android app I purchased this product about 4 months ago to add to my existing hue lighting system which consists of a second gen Hue hub, 3 color bulbs, Iris, and Bloom. It was surprisingly easy to sync with the Hue app and hub. I mounted it right next to another set of switches in the living room and it looks like it's been there all along. It's also a nice touch that the switch itself is portable when needed. It's connected to the wall using an outlet surround/cover which connects to the remote by magnets. I have not really carried it around like a remote, but it's nice to have the option. Users can program the on switch with up to 5 preset light scenes. Just keep tapping to change all lights to the next setting. The dimmer buttons up and down are very accurate and it seems like they're only limited by the lights connect. It dims in small increments all the way down to a very faint glow. The switch has been very responsive overall. Button presses change the current light settings almost immediately. The only real complaint I have (and it's small) is that there have been a couple of occasions where the dimmer switch has disconnected itself from the Hub. My living room is 15ft by 25ft, but I also have 5 lights, the dimmer switch, and my wireless router in this same area. Based on what I understand about how the "web of connectivity" links all hue devices together this connection issue shouldn't happen. Most times I can hit on/off and the switch reconnects, but once I had to fully reset the switch to get it working again. This issue is why I've rated it just shy of 5 stars and I'd rate it 4.5 if I could! Over all this was a great purchase and blows away the other hue tap round remote that I tried first. It's just as versatile and much more use-friendly. This product is for you if you have others in your household or guests who aren't so familiar with smart home tech and smartphones. It takes your smart lighting system and reduces it back to a simple light switch that people of all ages and tech levels can understand. It does all of this while adding even more customization and maintaining all the reasons you spent so much on a Hue smart lighting system to begin with.

I've been meaning to get a wall switch for my hue lights for a while now. I kinda figured that the Tap switch was going to be my only option until this came along with a much more attractive price point and more conventional look. And it works great. That said there are a couple downsides to choosing this over the Tap: -Battery. As in this needs one. It's a minor thing since the battery included will no doubt last forever, but it should be mentioned that this is not a kinetic energy powered device like the Tap. Of course for some people this is probably a plus, since the Tap does require you to hammer it a little to work. -Less Programmable. The Tap is interesting because it lets you pretty much program the multiple buttons to do whatever you want. This one, though, only allows 1 scene to be stored at a time. I'll admit I'm a little disappointed that there isn't a cycle option or the like, but I suppose that's what the phone is for. That said, it's also got some serious advantages over the Tap: -Integrated Dimmer. Why the Tap doesn't have this is beyond me. The ability to adjust the brightness on your scenes is a great feature of this thing. -More portable. The actual switch unit is held in place with magnets, making it easy to pop it off and carry around with you. I have mine mounted right by my door so when I get in I can turn the lights on, pop it in my pocket, and head into the living room where I can then adjust the brightness to whatever I'm going to be doing next, be that cleaning, hosting people, or just dimming them down to watch some TV. Then I take it into my bedroom, turn off all the lights, and leave it on my night stand. Next morning I pop it back into its place by the door when I leave. Hard to do with the larger "hockey puck" design of the Tap. -Conventional Design. This thing blends in much better with the existing lightswitches than the Tap ever could. So yeah. Both the Tap and this Dimmer are fine accessories to the Hue lighting system. On balance I think I do like this one more for the reasons listed above, most notably the portability. That said I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed that a 2nd generation or software patch will be coming eventually to allow us more options to customize how it works.

    Great, but not perfect

These dimmer switches are a MUST if you have the Hue lights. Without the dimmer switches, you need to turn your lights off via your phone or tablet every time you would like to turn the lights off, which isn't always convenient. Of course, you could simply flip the switch, but this renders the lights useless later, as they will no longer have power and they will not be connected to the Hue bridge. I removed the light switches from my walls, tucked them in the metal container in the wall, and covered them with a flat, plain electric outlet cover (without any holes or port openings). This allowed me to stick the dimmer switches over the existing light switches without worrying that the light switches would ever accidentally be turned off, preventing the lights from connecting to the Hue bridge. The dimmers look MUCH better than modern light switches and they are magnetic, so you can remove them from their plate and use them as a remote, if you'd like. Unfortunately, they aren't perfect. If you're like me and you have a TON of wireless devices on your network, you will experience some interference at seldom times. If you ever press the dimmer switch and nothing happens, simply hit it 1-2 more times and it will most likely make it around the interference. You could also make sure that your wireless router fully reaches throughout the entirety of your home. If it doesn't, simply by an extender or another router to use as an extender. This will help to clear up any of the "dark" areas where the signal is weaker/non-existent.

I currently have a beginner smart home set up, and I originally bought this product just so that I had a way to turn on and off my hue lights without flipping the home's light switch or talking to the Google Home. I was only expecting commands for on, off, dim, and brighten, but what I got was much more. When you initially set up the Hue Switch it is defaulted to on and off. You cannot switch the commands for dimming and brightening the lights, but what you can do is control how the on button works. You can set 5 different responses from the on button press. Whether you have just 1 light in the room, or many lights in the room this comes in handy. Let me explain how it works. Within the Phillips Hue app, you can set up 5 different things for the on button to do. When I hit the on button once it turns the light on to the last setting it had when I turned it off. When I press it a second time I have it turn to a bright white light. When I press it a third time the room goes into a cool blue theme that I use for bed time. (not too bright, but still able to navigate when getting ready for bed) When I press the on button a fourth time, it goes into a relaxing theme that is less harsh on your eyes and good for reading. And finally, with the fifth press of the button, it turns the light into a night light. You can set these 5 settings to whatever color or scheme that you want. It is pretty cool. About as useful as the Phillips Hue Tap switch, only this one can only control one room. For single room use, I would prefer this over the Phillips Hue Tap. For multi-room use, I would probably go with the Hue Tap switches around the house.

Turns out voice isn't always the best way

When we first started collecting Hue bulbs I assumed we would always use voice commands. My wife continuously complained about my Hue bulbs because she lost the ability to flip the switch. She's right, it's actually easier sometimes to just hit a button. I've got 2 of these Hue switches now and they have worked perfectly each and every time. Alexa can be hit and miss with voice commands but these switches are solid. They're also great for the rare times that your internet goes down (Which doesn't seem to be so rare around here). The switches use the bridge and your router to work. So even without an active internet connection you can still turn off and on your lights. Mounting to the wall was super simple. Each "base" includes sticky tape on the back and will mount straight to your wall with no additional tools or holes. I had this switch on my bedroom wall in under a minute. They are also magnetic! I have one in my kitchen that I put on the fridge. The magnet is very strong and it hasn't had any problem falling off, even with kids opening and slamming the fridge doors dozens of times a day. The switch itself includes 4 buttons. On, Off, a button for brighter, a button for Dimmer. You can set the on button to trigger different scenes for added functionality. Hit the On button once and scene bright is triggered. Hit it a second time and scene relax is triggered ect. There really isn't much to complain about with these switches. It's one of the rare Hue accessories that I think is actually fairly priced. I'll be adding a switch in every room in my house going forward.

Adds Functionality But A Little Pricey

Quick Summary A remote control switch to control Hue lights without a smart phone. It adds a great deal of functionality to the Hue system, but it is a little pricey. Background I really like the ability to control the lights with my phone, changing colors and brightness levels. However, I found that sometimes when going into a room quickly, you just want to turn the light on, do what you need to do, and then leave again turning the light off. This is not practical with a smart phone as I don't carry mine with me all over the house. Sure you could use the existing light switches but then if you turn the light off that way, you can't use the phone to turn it on because the power is physically cut off. Enter the Hue Dimmer Switch. Features Allows you to turn any number of Hue lights on, off, and adjust the brightness. This switch is registered to the Hue infrastructure (aka your Hue bridge) and once paired, you can use the app to set any number of lights to be controlled with the switch. You can also assign a specific scene to the switch. For example I have two scenes programmed into my Hue app on my phone. I have a "normal" scene to give me normal white light that any bulb would give and an "ambiance" scene which has exotic colors for movies and listening to music. I have the "normal" scene set to this switch, so when I go into the room to do something quick, I can turn it on and then turn it off when I leave. But if I'm going to watch a movie for a couple hours I'll grab my phone, switch on the "ambiance" scene, and adjust it to whatever color matches the movie or song style. One thing to note too is that this switch is removable. It comes with a plate that is affixed to a wall either with screws or 3M type tape and then the switch (which is really a wireless remote) is attached to that plate with a magnet and can be removed. The permanent wall mount does not have to be used at all if you'd like to just use the remote switch.

Must Have for Your Hue System

We purchased the Philips Hue Dimmer Switch with our Hue Starter Kit so that we could control our new lights like a traditional lighting system. We didn't feel comfortable with only having the Hue App to control the lights. And Philips recommends leaving your Hue lights powered at all times. This switch is easy to add to your Hue system and setup. You have the option to assign lights to the switch and whether to just turn them on and off or you can assign a particular scene. I decided to assign the default scene to the switch so no matter what state or scene the lights were last used with, this switch will turn them on to the default scene. We mounted it on the wall next to the other set of light switches in our home. We also added a Light Switch Cover to cover the actual light switch that powers the Hue lights. This way the switch is always on and can't be turned off by accident. You can find the switch covers online. The Hue Light switch is also removable from the wall mount so you can use it like a remote control. So far we are pleased with our Hue Lighting system and the Dimmable Light Switch. For more info, see my review of the Philips Hue Starter Kit. I highly recommend this switch for those who want to add a traditional style wall switch to their Philips Hue system.

Philips - hue Wireless Dimmer Switch

Philips hue Dimmer Switch: Easily adjust your smart lighting with this convenient dimmer switch. It's compatible with your Philips hue devices and features a wall-mountable design. The switch also functions as a remote, so you can control your lighting from a distance. I removed all the light switches from my walls, wired them to stay hot constantly and then tucked them in the metal switch box in the wall, and covered them with a flat, plain electrical outlet cover (without any holes or port openings). If you're like me and you have a over 70 wireless devices on your network, you will experience some interference at seldom times. All in all the Switch works nice, however the Home app definitely need work , Apple needs to go back and do an update on the Home because sometimes its hit or miss. I would give five stars if it worked flawlessly all the time.
