Generally speaking, you need to connect to your wifi/router via ethernet cable. However, some people who live in apartments with communal wifi and no access to the router have been able to get it to work using a wifi to ethernet adaptor. Be prepared to put in some work though. Netgear makes one of these adapters: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Universal-Ethernet-Adapter-WNCE2001/dp/B003KPBRRW
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The bridge is connected to your router via Ethernet. It communicates to the bulbs wirelessly (via the ZIGBEE protocol) of course but you def need the hub wired, CAT5 to your hub. Cable included with hub. It's a much better experience with the hub for saving scenes, adding switches etc.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This does need an ethernet cable to plug in. I am using this as well as a some smart outlets (not paired with the hue) and my lights are much more stable than my Wifi plugs are. U have found the investment of a hub is worthwhile and worth using the ethernet port on my range extender.
