If you get the Bluetooth one you can control the lights through you phone, using the app HueBT. The hub will be necessary if you want it to be control it also with Google assistance or alexa.

If you buy the light strips that are Bluetooth then no. you will just have to be within a closer proximity. The Hugh bridge allows you to control your lights from home and away from home via your WiFi.
