It really depends on the purpose for the lights. I went for the color kit because I wanted to add some accent lighting to my living room, so I wanted the color for that purpose. Since getting the color kit, I have also added a few white only bulbs to the system, and where I put those (Kitchen, hallway), I didn't need to have color. If you are just looking for standard lights for a lamp or a bedroom, and have no need for color, there is no reason to spend the extra money on the color lights. If you want to add some great accent lighting and color washes on your walls to liven up a room, I would not hesitate to grab the color kit. You will be happy with either.

Having the color options is way better than plain white!

I use the white bulbs in rooms I don't care to use color, but, in my main rooms I have color bulbs. The color bulbs have white light, but the white light kit does not do color. Per bulb, the color bulbs are usually 3-5 times as expensive. If you are buying as a gift, I would suggest buying them the color starter kit. They can always add more lights to the set later to fill the rooms as they see fit.

I use the color bulbs throughout my entire apartment though. Some people want the color bulbs because you can really customize your entire appearance throughout your place. I have dimmer switches throughout my place too. I have white bulbs in my less traffic places, like my laundry room. So, that kit wold be nice for just that, but I don't need any extra hubs. It just depends on each individuals preference.
