The Hue bridge is not required to change the color of the light bulb. As long as you have a Bluetooth enabled phone and the app, you will be able to change the color in millions of colors or pre set colors like Sunday morning or Cozy colors.

The Hue Bridge is not required to change the colors and access various scene and dimming features. The Philip's Hue Bluetooth App is what you will use to connect to the light bulbs.
The bridge makes it easier to connect multiple lights to each other and offers some extra features.
