Yes, when plugged in it actually charges at a higher rate. The car play function works with navigation, You can switch between displays anytime so you can see turn by turn or navigate you playlists. The music will get plays and Siri and navigation interrupt to provide instructions as needed. I purchased the model for that same reason, used this function on family trip that same weekend after it was installed. Worked great.
