• Actually, the OP is asking whether the phone needs to be connected AT ALL, wired or wirelessly, when the goal is to ONLY use the GPS.

• For Android Auto on the AVH-2550NEX, you would need to have your Android phone connected. If you do not want to plug your phone in, you would need to look at a model that supports Wireless Android Auto. For example, the DMH-W4660NEX or the DMH-W2770NEX.
